SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Before submitting an article to Traffic, please read the following guidelines to ensure your submission is accepted. Traffic is a fully refereed journal (which means it is a valuable addition to your publishing record no matter what your field), so your submission must fulfil a number of criteria in order to be accepted for publication. If you are a Science student, also see our Science FAQ.

Who can submit to Traffic?

Only postgraduates enrolled at Melbourne University may submit articles to Traffic. You may have submitted your thesis but may not have been awarded your degree at the deadline for submissions of articles to Traffic.
Reviews are accepted from current postgraduates of all Australian universities.

What is the word limit?

Articles should not exceed 5000 words (exclusive of tables and endnotes); reviews should not exceed 1000 words.

Can I submit a chapter of my thesis or an article I've submitted elsewhere?

If you submit a chapter of your thesis it will need to be reworked:

  1. to appeal to a broad readership
  2. to relate the work to the issue's theme
  3. to conform with the Traffic style guide.

An article submitted to Traffic may not be under consideration elsewhere. Contact the editor if you wish to submit the article to another journal while it is under consideration at Traffic.
Submissions may be rejected if they fail to satisfy any of the above requirements.

How are articles and reviews chosen for Traffic?

When your article is received, and if it fulfils the submission requirements, it will be sent to experts in your field for review. These referees read your article "blind" (ie: they do not know who you are) and advise the editor whether the article is of publishable standard and if there are any improvements which should be made. The editor chooses the best articles and reviews with regard to:

  1. referee feedback or scholarly merit
  2. the theme of the issue
  3. representation across disciplines.

Traffic receives many more submissions than can be published, therefore the work you submit should be well-written and drafted. Show your article to your supervisor or a colleague before you submit and improve the article based on their feedback. If your piece is accepted it is likely still to require some changes which may be suggested by referees and/or the editor.

Who awards the Traffic prize?

A shortlist is compiled by a committee within UMPA which has student and staff representation. The shortlisted articles are then blind ranked by a jury of high academic standing within the university.

How do I submit?

Do not put your name anywhere on the article, or include anything in the article which would identify you to a referee.
When you submit, include the following in your cover letter:

  1. your name as you want it to appear in the journal
  2. your contact details (postal address and phone numbers)
  3. your department and the name(s) of your supervisor(s)
  4. the title of your article
  5. a 100-word abstract of the article
  6. a 150-word (max.) biographical note written in the third person.

A submission may be rejected if it does not contain all of the above.
Submissions will only be accepted by e-mail attachment. Send as a word document (".doc") if using IBM-compatible machine or in rich text format (".rtf") if using Mac to traffic@umpa.unimelb.edu.au. Submissions will be acknowledged by return e-mail.
