Do you need a quiet place to study without such distractions as the TV, housemates, or family? Is there no room for you in your faculty or department? Are you in the last stages of your degree? If these apply, you may be eligible for a shared study carrel.
There are 68 study carrel spaces in the Graduate Centre, which are jointly managed by UMPA and the Melbourne School of Graduate Research (MSGR). Each carrel has a desk, computer (IBM or Macintosh), phone, lockable cupboards and filing cabinet.
To be eligible to apply for a carrel you must be a currently enrolled postgraduate student. Priority is given to students who are in the final stages of their course. This means within six months of completion for Master's or diploma students or within twelve months of completion for PhD students.
The demand for carrel places almost always exceeds the number of vacancies, so carrels are allocated according to a Carrel Policy (download Acrobat PDF document). Carrels are shared on either a time-share or room-share basis, so applicants should also check out the Guidelines for Carrel Sharing (download Acrobat PDF document).
To apply for a study carrel download the Carrel Information sheet and Application form (Acrobat PDF), read it carefully, and submit it to UMPA Reception. Applications are considered by a Carrel Allocation Committee, which meets early each month.
Enquiries about carrels from prospective applicants should be directed to UMPA's Facilities & Resources Co-ordinator, phone 8344 8323 or email carrels@umpa.unimelb.edu.au.
